Recipes For Dog Treats

Pampering your furry, four-footed baby means making him the best homemade treats, just like you would your "real" kids. These recipes for dog treats can be quite simple and fun!

Good Dog Cookies

1/2 cup powdered milk
1 egg, well beaten
2 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp garlic salt
1 1/2 tsp brown sugar
1/2 cup water
6 tbsp gravy
Meat baby food

This is one of the most popular recipes for dog treats, and most dogs find them "doggone" irresistible. Preheat oven to 350F degrees. In a bowl, mix all ingredients well. On a well-floured board, roll out the mixture to 1/2" thickness. With a floured cookie cutter, cut out shapes in the dough and place them on a lightly greased cookie sheet, about 1" apart.
Bake at 350F degrees for about 25-30 minutes until the cookies are crisp. Using a cooling rack, allow them to cool completely before giving them to your pup or storing them in an airtight container.

Wheat Dog Biscuits

3/4 cup hot water, chicken broth or beef broth
1/3 cup margarine
1/2 cup powdered milk
1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp minced garlic
1 tbsp parsley flakes
1 egg, beaten
3 cups whole wheat flour

Preheat oven to 325F degree. In a large bowl, combine water or broth with margarine. Add powered milk, salt, garlic, parsley and egg and mix until all ingredients are combined well. Add flour in 1/2 cup increments, stirring well after each addition.
Knead dough for 3-4 minutes then roll dough out on a floured surface to 1/2" thickness. With a floured cookie cutter, cut out shapes and placed them on a lightly greased baking sheet. Bake at 325 degrees for 50 minutes. Allow cookies to cool completely then store them in an airtight container for storage. Yield: About 1 1/4 pounds of biscuits.

Puppy Birthday Cake

1 1/2 cup all purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup softened butter
1/2 cup of corn oil
1 jars of beef baby food, strained
4 eggs
2-3 strips of beef jerky

Preheat oven to 325F degrees. Grease and flour an 8x5x3 loaf pan. In a large bowl, cream butter until smooth. Blend in baby food, eggs, and oil and then mix until smooth. Add dry ingredients to beef mixture until smooth. Crumble beef jerky and fold into cake batter. Pour batter into loaf pan and bake for about 1 hour and 10 minutes. Cake is done when a knife or toothpick comes out cleanly when poked in the center. Cool on wire rack for 10 minutes. Cottage cheese or plain yogurt makes the best frosting. Store the uneaten portion in your refrigerator.
